THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

Short Summary of Sherri Valance's most significant moments in the Outsiders
(20 Points!)

Answers

Answer:

Balancing Perspectives

In S.E. Hinton's novel, The Outsiders, most of the major characters are Greaser boys. To balance out the perspective of the Socs versus the Greasers, Hinton introduced a strong female Soc, Cherry Valance. Cherry is caught up in the game, but at least realizes it is a game. Pony and Cherry know that you can see the sunset from both sides of town.

Explanation:

Sherri Valance, or Cherry as everyone calls her because of her red hair, is a strikingly beautiful and popular cheerleader. From the moment she meets Ponyboy and Johnny, she comes across as having strong standards. Examples of her highly developed sense of values include walking out on her boyfriend for bringing alcohol to the drive-in, and throwing a coke in Dally's face because he talked dirty to her.

Part of it is, but not all. You greasers have a different set of values. You're more emotional. We're sophisticated--- cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us. You know, sometimes I'll catch myself talking to a girl-friend, and realize I don't mean half of what I'm saying. I don't really think a beer blast on the river bottom is super-cool, but I'll rave about one to a girl-friend just to be saying something. I never told anyone that. I think you're the first person I've ever really gotten through to."

Read the excerpt from "On Becoming an Inventor" by Dean Kamen.

When I was twelve years old and Barton, my older brother, was around fifteen, we took over the family basement. At first, I made a darkroom for developing pictures, and Bart was using it as his lab where he was raising about one hundred white rats, removing their thymus glands, and trying to figure out the glands' dysfunction. He wanted pictures taken of his experiment, doing the surgery on rats, and since I already had a darkroom, I took the pictures, though somewhat reluctantly. I didn't like the blood.

What can you conclude about Barton from the excerpt?

He was interested in solving medical mysteries at a rather early age.
He did not understand why Dean would be squeamish about the blood.
He went on to become a very famous and successful doctor.
He had a severe dislike for rats and all other kinds of rodents.

What is characterization?

Characterization is a literary strategy that is employed in literature piece by piece to emphasize and clarify the specifics of a character in a narrative. The writer presents the character in the first act with a definite emergence. The author frequently discusses the character's actions after introducing him, followed by the character's cognitive processes as the novel goes on.

The term "characterization" was first used in literature in the middle of the 15th century. "Tragedy is a portrayal, not of persons, but of activity and existence," Aristotle claimed in his book Poetics. This makes the claim that "plot-driven narrative"—the dominance of plot over characters—unmistakable.

Describe the new techniques during the Song Dynasty which led to increased farming

Answers

Answer:

- "early ripening rice"

- new irrigation techniques and systems

- planting new crops (cotton, tea)

Explanation:

Song Dynasty was a famous Chinese dinasty ruling from 10th till 13th century.

Among other things, this period is famous for massive agricultural improvements which increased crop production. Subsequently, that led to the increase in China's population.

Probably the most famous improvement was the development and use of "early ripening rice". This rice had a shorter life cycle which meant that it could grow 2 - 3 times per year, making more crops.

Also, new irrigation systems and techniques were invented which allowed the crops to be watered more efficiently and preventing drought.

We must not forget that China started farming other crops at that time including tea and cotton.

All of this improved farming making it one of the most notable legacy of the Song Dynasty.

What is the term used to define the subject in a command which implies that "you" do something?

Answers

Answer:

Implied subjects occur when a sentence does not state the doer of the action, but it is clear to whom the sentence is referring. Implied subjects often occur in imperative sentences. For example, in the sentence: "Go to the store!" the subject is not mentioned. The verb, "go", is not paired with a subject, but since the sentence is a command, which would be directed towards the person who is receiving the command, the implied subject is you. "(You) go to the store!"
