An Embarrassing First Date
My first date with Kennedi was embarrassing. 21 decided to take
her to a small Italian restaurant. 3That my friends told me had reason-able prices. 4 looked over the menu and realized I could not pro-nounce the names of the dishes. Such as "bucatini con funghi" and
"fettucini alfredo." Then I noticed a burning smell. The candle on the
table was starting to blacken. 8And scorch the back of my menu. Trying to be casual, I quickly poured half my glass of water onto the menu. When the waiter returned to our table. "He asked me if I wanted to order some wine. 21 ordered a bottle of Blue Nun. 13The only
wine that I had heard of and could pronounce. 14The waiter brought the wine, poured a small amount into my glass, and waited. 151 said, “You don't have to stand there. We can pour the wine ourselves." 16 After the waiter put down the wine bottle and left. 7 Kennedi told me I was sup-posed to taste the wine. 18Feeling like a complete fool.11 barely managed to get through the dinner. 20 However, after I texted Kennedi to apologize for my awkwardness, we decided to start over and go on another date.

Completing the passage with the words in parentheses

This question requires a good knowledge of vocabulary as well as good comprehension skills. Let's use blank number 8 as an example on how to answer this question.

For number 8, the word in parentheses is "predict". However, the word should refer to the noun "conversation," which means it should be an adjective. We can make an adjective out of predict by adding -able, forming "predictable."

Still, "predictable" would be wrong. Right after blank number 8, the passage says we do not know where the conversation is going. That means we cannot predict it. Thus, we need to add un- and form "unpredictable" to complete number 8 properly.

HURRY PLEASE. It’s hard to imagine two more different structures than the Eiffel Tower and Hoover Dam. For one thing, the Eiffel Tower is in Paris, France, and Hoover Dam is on the border between Nevada and Arizona. The Eiffel Tower is elegant and delicate looking, but Hoover Dam looks like a huge slab of concrete. The Eiffel Tower was made of many parts put together. But the concrete for Hoover Dam was poured at the site. The Eiffel Tower was built for a fair and was not intended to remain in place for long. Hoover Dam was built to allow water to be used in desert country and to create electricity. Everyone expected it to remain in place for many, many years.

Even though these two structures are so different, there are similarities. Each required great effort to complete. Each also necessitated the involvement of many workers. The workers on each faced many challenges and difficulties, and each was built in a series of steps. Each is huge but was built quickly, considering the amount of labor involved.

All of the Eiffel Tower’s parts were made in a factory near Paris. Each piece had to be the right size and shape. Smaller parts were put together and then joined to form a larger piece. These large pieces were put together at the site of the tower. Bolts held together the pieces made at the factory. At the tower, these bolts were pulled out and replaced with hot rivets. Teams of people worked to take out the bolts and put in the rivets.

Hoover Dam was built to replace one that had been washed away, but it was built in a new place. Four tunnels were blasted through rock to cause the Colorado River to flow in new directions. Then the river’s canyon walls had to be cleared. From great heights, workers dangled from ropes. With only air below their feet, they prepared the area for great concrete walls. Far underneath them, the area for the foundation was cleared of mud and loose rock. When this was finished, tons of wet concrete were poured into a gigantic form. For thirty months, concrete was poured until the work was done. Across the Colorado River stood a dam 700 feet tall. When the water was allowed to rush through tunnels, it passed through giant rotary engines, and as their parts whirled, they created electricity.

Making electricity and using water to irrigate dry land were both practical purposes for Hoover Dam. But the Eiffel Tower had no original purpose but to be beautiful. The man who designed it, Gustave Eiffel, looked for a practical use for it. The tower was more than a thousand feet tall, and it was a perfect place for a radio antenna. So, a radio station was built on the tower.

Both the Eiffel Tower and Hoover Dam are popular tourist attractions. Each is considered a marvelous example of engineering skill. What is the purpose of the first paragraph of the article? A.
to tell where the Eiffel Tower and Hoover Dam are located

to show just how different the Eiffel Tower and Hoover Dam are

to describe how one type of material was used to make different structures part b: A.

Answer:

This is both a cynical and optimistic poem that portrays an economically and technologically progressing generation that has lost sight of what really matters in life.

Answer: Pessimistic and hopeful

Explanation:

"The Lost Generation" both a pessimistic and hopeful poem about a generation that has lost sight of what is really important in life as it progresses technologically. When read from top to bottom, the poem is read from the viewpoint of a young man who has a selfish and defeated outlook on life, emphasizing work above family and openly asserting that destroying nature would become the norm, further stating that he, like his classmates, does not care about the Earth. The poem as a whole is rather negative and written in a more narrative style.

STATUS AND RANK IN MORTUARY ARCHAEOLOGY

January 24, 2012 · by Kate Meyers Emery · in Funeral Practices, Mortuary Archaeology, Theories. ·

Using mortuary sites as evidence for reconstructing social organization in the past is not a new field of study. It became popular in the 1960s through 1980s during the New Archaeology era. In 1971, Binford argued that the study of mortuary sites was important because one could determine the social structure of the society from the study of the artifacts and burials. Differential treatment of the body, varying facilities of disposal, and variation in the grave goods were all signs that individuals had different social personae. By presenting burials as a reflection of structure rather than ideas, it gave archaeologists a way to integrate this form of evidence into systems theories and a solid piece of evidence that could be recovered, unlike belief systems. Binford (1971) argued that the higher status an individual was the more people would be invested in their burial. Tainter (1978) used this to create an analysis of energy expenditure, whereby more energy was used in burials for higher-ranking individuals. Peebles and Kus (1977) argued that different clusters of grave goods with burials meant different statuses, which could either be ranked vertically or due to different horizontal group associations. However, as noted by Carr (1995), the ‘excavation’ of social systems is just as difficult as the ‘excavation’ of belief systems. Determining status and rank requires careful contextual interpretation.

Campeche Museum, Mayan Burial

The problem with studies like Binford, Tainter, or Peebles and Kus, is that they do not consider evidence beyond the burial, grave goods, and immediate location. Focusing completely on social organization means losing sight of other potentially important variables. Spatial relationships need to be determined, as well as the potential symbolic meanings of the burials. While the social structure may frequently correlate with burial patterns, it isn’t necessarily the cause of the burials. It is important to consider the range of reasons behind certain burials including the social, ideological and environmental dimensions. Determining rank and status can be done, it just needs to be done carefully

From Oxford Archaeo, Attic red-figure lekythos

Another source of information often looked over in the past are the individuals themselves. Health is an important indicator of status, whether it be a lowered risk of infection, better access to medicine, differential access to food, or occupation. A new study by Watkins (2012) looks at the health of a historic skeletal collection. By looking at the variation in osteoarthritis (OA) patterns, the presence of enthesopathy, fractures and cause of death, she determined that there were two samples of skeletons from two very different social contexts. Based on the presence of mild OA and muscular stress, low disease and healed fractures in one group with much higher age, he determined that these were individuals collected from an almshouse. The second group had a higher prevalence of OA and muscular stress was affected by more diseases and had worse fractures suggesting that they did not have the care of an almshouse, but were on their own. Looking at the social context of early 20th century Washington, DC (where the collection comes from), Watkins (2012) argues that the first group may have been connected to an almshouse where individuals could get care throughout their life, where the second group did not have this connection. While this group has been lumped together in the past as reflecting a poor population, a closer examination reveals internal diversity that is important for better understanding social conditions and structure
